The Easy Way to Walk Away from Stress
Just the mere word, walking, is enough to make the most avid sedentary person cringe. But even if you have not yet become accustomed to walking to clear your head, fear not. You’re headed for a pleasant experience.
So how exactly do you find the best exercise routine for you? It’s quite simple, actually. You don’t have to venture outside your comfort zone and climb mountains, but you do need to find an environment in which you are comfortable.
When you’re under stress, your body tenses up and your brain releases a chemical, which propels you into the fight or flight response. As a result, your body tries to figure out whether it should flee the situation or fight to resolve the problem. This is the body’s built in stress management technique.
This puts stress on your body. Because they feel tense, some people may find themselves happier sitting than getting out and doing something active. Such is the case for many people.
But what you need to realize is that activity is a great way to channel your stress, and it may actually enhance your ability to deal with the other stressors in your life.
Let’s first think about what happens when you walk. When you get out and move around, you expend pent up energy, which ultimately helps rid your body of toxins and aids in the detoxification process.
When you walk in a relaxing environment, you essentially put your worries out of your mind. When using walking as a stress management strategy, the best thing to do is to find an environment where you can let yourself go completely.
A park or a wooded neighborhood are both great places to lose yourself and let go of whatever stress you may have. I myself am lucky enough to live by the sea and a walk along the shore is one of my favorite and most relaxing activities.
One thing that may help you get into the walking groove is immersing yourself in nature. As you walk, lose yourself in the sounds around you. As a result, you will begin to feel your tension slowly melt away.
What you will also see is an overall sense of well being. You will feel better as a whole, not to mention your body will feel more limber. At the same time, you will tone muscles, and move toward a fit and healthier you.
At first, it may seem hard to motivate yourself to walk, but the truth is that you will feel better by walking than you would from sitting and watching television. In addition to being a great workout, walking gets you outside and helps you experience something outside of your home.
Continue to walk at least three times per week, and vary it up a bit. Walking is a natural stress reliever. Getting out will not only help you tone your body, but it is a great time for reflection.
One of the best ways to relieve stress is to get in touch with yourself. A lot of times we lose ourselves in the everyday shuffle. We become immersed in our families and our jobs.
And finally, when you have time to do something for yourself, you’re so exhausted that all you want to do is sit or go to sleep.
Walking helps you get around that. It will actually give you energy and the go power you need to face other challenges in life.
In addition to getting you out of the house and away from the stressors of your everyday life, it also gives you the opportunity to focus on your own thoughts.
Another helpful technique that may help you relax is deep breathing. Take long, slow breaths, and repeat with each step. If you have a hard time coming up with a rhythm with which you are comfortable, hone in on the sounds around you.
If the breeze is blowing, get your breathing in sync with the air. Take long, sweeping breaths, and allow the wind to caress your face. Close your eyes for a moment, and lose yourself, but only for a moment. Keep your eye on the road ahead of you.
Not only this is this a great way to reduce stress, but it helps you release negative energy that would otherwise cause you stress and lead to other problems. What you will see is a gradual improvement in your health and overall sense of well being as you channel your frustrations into something constructive.
Walking has a number of other great benefits, too. It will help improve your posture and increase your stamina. People often feel stressed out, because of a lack of exercise, so walking is ideal in the sense that it helps you stay healthy and takes away feelings of unease.
When you walk, you get a full mind body workout. This will help with concentration, and may make it easier to attend to issues that need your attention.
Try to avoid walking in busy shopping malls. They can be noisy, and may keep you from relaxing fully. Instead, opt for a quiet atmosphere where you can be at one with nature.
Walking is a great way to aid in stress management and improve your overall health. Now put on some walking shoes, and put your mind at ease!
