Ending Stress

Managing Stress in the Workplace is Easier than You Think

You arrive at the office in the morning, and there’s an assignment waiting on your desk.  The boss is watching over your shoulder.  And a coworker needs you to help them with a project.  With scenarios like these, it comes as no surprise that stress in the workplace can bring you down.  This can lead you to feel pressured, trapped, and just plain helpless.

If you’re like most people, you can relate to this common scenario.  At a time when jobs are few, a lot of people are struggling to prove themselves and make sure they exceed job expectations.  This is a major cause of stress in the workplace.

Many people want to ensure they have a job when they return the next morning.  Because of this, they find themselves working long hours to impress their boss and increase productivity.  This can wear you out and make you feel smothered.  Working so much is especially common today as world economies continue to face financial problems.

Stress in the workplace can be caused by any number of things.  These can include:

· Deadlines

· Miscommunication

· Too much work

· Being interrupted

Deadlines

Deadlines are an integral part of any job, which often require you to put in long hours and possibly weekends.  Working so much can lead you to spread yourself to thin as you try to balance work and family.  This results in increasing demands on your time.  You can only do so much, but finding ways to combat this stress is quite easy.

Prioritize.  Try to figure out which project is the most pressing.  If you have multiple deadlines, you’re probably feeling stressed.  Instead of trying to do everything simultaneously, take the project that is due first and focus your attention on that.  Focus on quality more than quantity, and try to avoid distractions.

Miscommunication

Miscommunication is a major cause of stress in the workplace.  A lot of times people are left out of important decisions and miss out on information regarding their job or assignment.  While this is sometimes unintentional, it happens quite often.  This can lead to poor job performance.  To avoid this, try to have at least one short meeting with your boss each day.  Just take a few minutes to get an update.

Too much work

A lot of people have expanding workloads and few pay increases.  But at the same time their workloads are getting heftier.  Deadlines are getting shorter.  And paychecks are getting smaller.  Many people find themselves trying to cram all their work into a small amount of time, which leads you to feel smothered and overworked.

A large majority of people are facing financial difficulties, because of these pay cuts.  This leads them to worry about supporting their families and can cause higher levels of stress.  If this sounds like you, you may be considering taking a second job.  Maybe you already have one and are extremely tired at the end of the day.  To ease some of this pressure, take a five minute break from work once in a while.  You will return to work feeling refreshed and ready to face the rest of the day’s pressures.

Being interrupted

It seems that just about every office has a socialite.  This person is chatty and somehow finds a way to get into everyone’s office to talk.  This causes interruptions in your work, which may slow down your productivity.  Try to politely ignore these people and immerse yourself back in your work.

Don’t talk too much to these people.  Instead, show the person that you are busy by asking other coworkers about the looming deadline.  Get involved in other office activities.  This shows them that you have more pressing things to do.

Just about everyone suffers from some level of stress in the workplace.  Whether that stress is low or high depends upon how you handle the situation.  Finding ways to deal with these stressors is easier than you think.  Use these tips to ensure a happy, less stressful workday.  You will thank yourself!
